A Student Fighting For Concealed Carry Rights On Campus Is Shot . . . On Campus

Nathan Scott was less than an hour into his shift at the FSU Strozier Library when his life changed forever. He began to hear sounds that he would soon realize were bullets being fired from a mentally unstable man’s pistol.

Scott was shot by the gunman and survived to tell his story. What makes this story a little more unique is that Scott is a member of the group Students For Concealed Carry. If that name doesn’t ring a bell, they are a nationwide group that promotes legal concealed carry on campus and attempts to change the minds of colleges all across the country.

Nathan Scott was defenseless against a gunman on campus, and was shot as a result.

While Florida recently began to allow concealed carry on the campuses of public universities in the state, students are only allowed to keep them in their vehicles. That doesn’t do much good when you’re fighting for your life in the college library.

“Hang on gunman, I need to run to my car quick so I can get my pistol to shoot back.”

I could go on for days with the sarcasm, but I’ll stop with just the one for now.

Scott was shot in the leg, but it could have been much worse. Ronny Ahmed, who was also in the library, was shot three times and is now paralyzed from the waist down.

Another student, Jason Derfuss, owes his life to the books that he had just checked out minutes before.

Florida’s decision to allow students to bring firearms onto campus, even if it’s just in their vehicles, is a step in the right direction. I can only hope, however, that this incident shows the importance of allowing these same students to carry their firearms on them while walking around during their daily activities.

If they have concealed carry permits to begin with, chances are they carry on a regular basis while off campus. Please don’t deny them their right to self defense, simply because they step over an imaginary line called The Gun Free Zone.
