Armed Citizen Shoots, Kills Man Who Put Gun To Girlfriend’s Head During Assault

BILLINGS, MONTANA — A man is dead after police say he assaulted his girlfriend and put a gun to her head, at which time a witness fired at him in an effort to save the woman.

Police identified 43-year-old Robert Aven Kolter as the man who was shot, and he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

In a press release, police found that Kolter had traveled to see a 33-year-old woman with whom he was in a relationship. A 34-year-old man, who enters this story as well, is a man who lives in a separate building on the property.

Prior to the shooting, Kolter was assaulting the woman, police said. The woman was strangled and pistol whipped and Kolter tried to force her to leave with him.

When Kolter put a gun to the woman’s head, the 34-year-old man who lived there shot him, police said. The names of the woman and the 34-year-old man have not been released.

The man who intervened likely saved this woman’s life, or at least saved her from severe injuries.

If you see something that’s not right, or just downright dangerous like in this case, sometimes action from a witness needs to be taken. Anything could happen, including Kolter going after the man who was trying to help the woman, but luckily that didn’t happen.

This armed citizen did the right thing, and ended up saving the day. Hopefully the woman is alright, and is able to recover from anything related to this incident.
