Concealed Carrying Brother Shoots and Kills Neighbor’s Dog to Protect His Little Sister

OMAHA, NEBRASKA — An 8-year-old girl was hurt Saturday afternoon in what the Nebraska Humane Society is classifying as an “attack”. Police found the girl with injuries after responding to a call of an aggressive dog near Minne Lusa Boulevard and Mary Street.

The incident reportedly occurred when a large Rottweiler ran toward the girl, who was unable to retreat due to physical barriers in the yard. The girl’s brother, whom Omaha Police confirmed has a concealed carry permit, fatally shot the dog and stopped the attack and any further injury to his sister.

Amy Holmes, the owner of the dog, surmised that the dog may have been playing, but also expressed sadness and remorse over the incident.

“It’s just heart-wrenching to know that he had to die this way. We’re feeling a lot of guilt, too. Obviously even though he wasn’t the type of dog to hurt anybody, we also understand that he was a 100-pound Rottweiler. He looks very scary and if you didn’t know who he was and he surprised you, that would be scary.”

The two families involved apparently knew each other and got along well. Holmes received a citation from police for failing to restrain the animal.
