ST. PAUL, MIINNESOTA – Kaleef L. Barnes, 33, of St. Paul, was shot in the 1200 block of Hewitt Avenue, according to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office, after kicking in the door of the home and threatening a woman inside on Friday, April 1, 2022.

Police were called to the home the previous day for a domestic incident between Barnes and the homeowner’s daughter. Barnes returned around 1:40 Friday morning, kicked in the front door and threatened the woman. The 56-year-old homeowner grabbed his firearm and fired several shots at Barnes, hitting him multiple times.

The homeowner called police and paramedics and waited for them outside. Barnes was pronounced dead by the paramedics at the scene, according to police spokesman Steve Linders.

Linders said the resident was taken to police headquarters, questioned and released.

The Ramsey County Attorney’s Office said that police have yet to forward the case for assessing whether charges against the man are warranted.

“It’s an ongoing investigation,” said a police spokeswoman, Sgt. Natalie Davis. “When the investigation is complete, it will be presented to the [County Attorney’s Office] for charging consideration.”

Police have not said whether Barnes had a weapon on him at the time.
