PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, MARYLAND — An alleged intruder and a resident are both dead after a double shooting.

The shootings took place at approximately 12:20 am on Tuesday, September 20, 2022. Officers with the Hyattsville Police Department were dispatched to a report of a burglary in progress at the home in the 5600 block of 30th Avenue.

Upon arriving, officers observed a car attempting to leave the residence. They stopped the vehicle and inside they saw a man in the car suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported via ambulance to the hospital where he later died. The victim was later identified as 23-year-old Giovanni Hayles and was a resident of the home.

Police said the man’s family said someone broke into the home and shot him. Officers went into the home and discovered the suspect dead in the basement with at least one gunshot wound. They also found a gun near his body. Detectives are working to identify him so that they can notify his family, according to police.

Police said the incident was not random and remains under investigation. Prince George’s County police are investigating the incident, because that department investigates homicides that happen in the city of Hyattsville.
