Following the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark 2022 decision overturning stringent gun control measures, New Jersey has seen a significant rise in individuals seeking to arm themselves. Prior to the ruling, only 631 carry permits were approved in 2021. Contrastingly, in the following year, approvals surged to 19,933. This increase is highlighted by newly centralized data from the state Attorney General’s office, a change from the previously decentralized application process. Attorney General Matthew Platkin emphasized the importance of transparency for public safety, noting that the data provides insights into the distribution of permit applications across the state.
The most notable upticks were observed in Toms River, Newark, and Old Bridge, indicating a widespread interest in carrying firearms. The Supreme Court’s decision, known as the Bruen decision, significantly altered gun policy by limiting states like New Jersey from enforcing strict concealed carry restrictions. This led to an overwhelming approval rate of carry permit applications post-decision, with 33,264 applications received and only 217 denied.
The shift has raised concerns among gun control advocates, pointing to a potential increase in gun violence. Critics argue that the decision has not only changed New Jerseyans’ attitudes towards carrying firearms but also compromised public safety. Despite these fears, proponents of the ruling assert that it enhances personal safety and reduces crime. Meanwhile, debates continue over the state’s efforts to collect data on permit holders and the implementation of laws designating certain areas as sensitive, with legal challenges ongoing.
